It’s been a pretty busy week for me but here are the sketch dailies from this week.
There’s a lot of Space Boy stuff amongst these sketches as I’ve been trying to work out a few concepts for some upcoming stuff. I will be doing a convention in Windsor on July 5th so I’m going to try to have a few new cool things available.
Album suggestion this week is Two Tongues (Self titled). Two Tongues is a super group with members of Say Anything and Saves the Day, and it’s a good time.
If you didn’t get a chance to catch last Sunday’s podcast it was on TCAF and there will be a new episode up tonight as well. www.comics-that-exist.com/podcast
So hopefully everybody has a good week and we’ll meet back here next week for some good drawing adventure stuff.
You can follow me at these places:
and of course at the mothership
Hope everyone had an exciting week. I started working on a new show this week called Fugget About It, it’s pretty funny, you should watch it. Also last weekend I went to SchoolismLive Toronto which was an amazing experience to learn from great artists and to meet some new people. The daily doodles have continued and I’ve started playing around with colour in them instead of just greys like the Pokemon were.
So at first I continued on with the Pokemon theme because of a request from a friend.
Then I switched it up to more character stuff. Lucas was announced for Smash Bros yesterday so I was pretty excited about that. Stiltzkin is my favourite Moogle from Final Fantasy IX so I wanted to draw him.
Then some original stuff. I made a little test poster image for a mini comic I’m working on set in the same universe as Super Space Boy Adventures (Which has begun updating again at http://www.comics-that-exist.com).
From the Schoolism Weekend I was able to get a Breaking Bad print signed by Stephen Silver which I think is pretty cool.
So if you like the stuff I posted up here you can follow my dailies all over the place including:

And I will see you here next week! Have a good one!
Kris Auger and myself will have a booth at FanExpo Toronto next week/weekend 28-31. We’re booth #335 in the artist alley, so make sure to swing by if you’re at the show.
Alongside some cool new prints I will have copies of my Game Items Zine which I think you’ll dig! Each zine comes with a random variant print of either the Dome or Helix Fossil (some contain both).
I also decided to do something new for business cards so I got a new design printed up on Tarot cards.
Last weekend I was at the Summer Comic Con in Windsor and that was a great time, thanks to everyone who swung by the booth and said hey. I will be returning to Windsor for the Christmas Comic Con on December 7th so if you’re in the area make sure you swing by as I will be releasing both Chapter 2 and 3 of Space Boy at that event.
A lot of people have been asking me about the hiatus on Super Space Boy Adventures, and I’ll talk about that here. Long story short, I’ve been really busy in the last 6 months starting a new job as well as other large personal projects. I have been working on Space Boy consistently throughout this time and was debating putting out the second book for the Summer Comic Con. I decided against this in an effort to make cooler items to be included in the special editions of the books which I think everyone will appreciate when they do get released. Pages will resume weekly updates on http://www.comics-that-exist.com starting September 10th and will update with 1 page every Wednesday. Chapter 2 and 3 are one continuous story so when the physical copies become available on December 7th there will only be 14 pages available online so the physical copies will get you very very far ahead vs the website.
Hopefully that answered any questions you have had about Space Boy, if you have any others give me a shout and I’ll let you know.
Also the first episodes of the show I’ve been working on have begun to air on PBS and they put my name in the credits, so that’s cool. Here’s a really blurry screengrab:
(Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, I’m bottom right)
So I guess that’s a pretty big update on everything, I’d like to say I’ll update this blog more frequently, but I guess we’ll see what happens.
Have a good one!
I wanted to let everybody know that I will be doing a couple cons in August so if you are in Windsor ON on August 17th swing by the Summer Comic Con and Fan Expo in Toronto ON August 28-31. I will be boothing alone for the Windsor con but will be sharing a booth with Kris Auger during Fan Expo, so be sure to swing by and check out some of our new cool stuff. Also the temporary hiatus on Super Space Boy Adventures will soon end and there will be a ton of new stuff for everybody (Physical copies of chapter 2 at the Windsor Con?). Aside from new prints I will also have some new zines which I’m pretty excited about, I’ll post more info when I figure out a printing method.
Also Super Space Boy Adventures has started updating weekly on my Deviantart page, if that’s more your pace http://rokusho1345.deviantart.com/. It moves a lot slower on there (1 page a week) and it will never catch up to www.comics-that-exist.com so it’s up to you where you want to read it, I may also start the same thing on Tumblr.
Since the last update of this blog a lot of cool stuff has happened, including but not limited to TAAFI (Toronto Animation Arts Festival International) which is a great festival to check out if you’re an animator or someone interested in the industry. There were a ton of very interesting and informative panels and awesome workshops. I was able to do a workshop on Storyboarding hosted by Natasha Allegri, Steve Wolfhard, and Vera Brosgol, which was an awesome time. Animation is pretty cool. If you’re an animator you should definitely come next year!
I guess that’s all I have to say this time, here are some doodles!
Have a good weekend everybody!
It’s been quite a while since I made a post on here so this one will be full of content. Last month I moved up to Toronto, first time living in a big city, so that has been an adjustment. I’ll be starting a new animation job next week which I am very grateful to be a part of. So let’s get to the art.
I made this punk dude right before the move. I like him a lot, he’s a rebel. After that is the Duck Crossing piece, I was briefly thinking of doing a zine about animals in everyday people situations, then it felt really cliche, then I felt really cliche, then I laid down for a bit and forgot about the whole thing. After that there is a piece that is just a sketch of some characters, I like aliens, robots, and monsters so I tend to do stuff like that. Then Hellboy, because I finally started reading Hellboy, I can’t believe it took me this long, I really like the art style. And the final sketch is of a monster dropping ice cream, because reasons…
I posted the linework as well as the completed version of the Metroid piece I did because I was very happy with the linework. Then Twitch plays Pokemon happened and I got weirdly into that, despite never actually participating in typing commands, so I did the Helix fossil, I’m also doing a dome fossil and I think I might do some mini prints for Toronto Comicon. Finally there is a sketchy expression sheet for the redesign of Space Boy, when I worked on chapter 1 of Space Boy I had no actual model sheets so the characters often changes size and volume. I will be remedying that problem for future chapters.
If you haven’t read Space Boy yet you can check it out online at www.comics-that-exist.com or you can purchase a physical copy on Etsy https://www.etsy.com/ca/shop/JamesMarontateArt or a digital copy on Gumroad https://gum.co/NcMHR. Also Kris and myself will have a booth in Artist Alley at Toronto Comicon this weekend (March 7-9). Our booth will be located here at A157.
Hopefully if you’re in the area you will swing by and say hey. I apologize again for the walls of text hopefully the wall of drawings makes up for it.
Hopefully you have all been doing well! And hopefully you have all been enjoying Super Space Boy Adventures over at http://www.comics-that-exist.com, today’s page is up http://comics-that-exist.com/comic_page.php?chapter=1&page=14.
